Sustainable StorySteps aims to develop innovative methods and tools that can help screenwriters integrate sustainability into their narratives. The project is based on the EU’s ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) reporting requirements from 2024, which impact the Danish film and television industry. Our research shows that screenwriters have a unique opportunity to influence public awareness through their stories, which is crucial for society’s sustainable transition.

The goal of Sustainable StorySteps is to create a platform that can help screenwriters craft stories that address climate change and environmental damage, thereby inspiring audiences to consider sustainability broadly. The project aims to develop a business model that can offer tools and solutions that meet industry needs and contribute to a sustainable future.

Nathali Herold Solon Pilegaard

Nathali Herold Solon Pilegaard is a postdoc at the University of Southern Denmark (SDU). She is employed at the Department of Design, Media, and Education at the Faculty of Humanities at SDU. She is affiliated with screenwriting development and media studies.

Nathali works on promoting sustainability in the Danish film and television industry. With a background in both academic research and practical experience from the industry, Nathali brings a unique combination of knowledge and practice to the table. She has researched how screenwriters create the worlds that viewers encounter in TV series such as “Valdes jul” and “Efterforskningen”.

Her research shows that creating worlds as a screenwriter involves setting a framework, and that details are crucial for creating a coherent and engaging narrative. Nathali is driven by a passion for creating research that has a direct impact on the industry and its practices. She sees entrepreneurship as a catalyst for innovative research and strives to translate her academic discoveries into practical applications that can help the film and television industry tackle current challenges and promote sustainability.

This project is supported by Spin-outs Denmark, a unique program that invests in researchers who create more impact by starting research-based companies.
